EAST LOTHIAN, with some of the best agricultural land in the British Isles, lies to the east of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city. Bounded by the Firth of Forth, the North Sea and the Lammermuir hills, it is a photographer's paradise - plenty of trees for autumn colour, open hillsides, wild rocky shores, unspoilt beaches, and fascinating stone-built villages, castles, mansions and churches. And superb golf courses.
DUNBAR, a burgh of about 5000 inhabitants, has two golf courses. There is sea angling, skindiving, water skiing, pony trekking, tennis, trampolining and bowling; and swimming and badminton at the Leisure Pool a mile away from Duke Street. Birdwatching and hillwalking are free! John Muir, father of America's National Parks, was born here in 1838 and lived in the High Street for 11 years. A small museum, a trail round the town, and a walk along the cliffs are named in his honour.
BELHAVEN is a Conservation Area at the Edinburgh end of Dunbar; once upon a time it was a separate village and seaport - `Biel Haven'. Old pictures show boats at the foot of Duke Street. Since those days land has been reclaimed, and the shore line is now a quarter-mile away. There's a footbridge across the Biel Burn, but at high tide it's in the sea; at low tide you can cross it to a two and a half mile long strand, Belhaven Beach, in the John Muir Country Park - a marvellous after-dinner walk on one of our long summer evenings.
DUKE STREET is quiet, and you can park in the street. Buses for Edinburgh (27 miles) or North Berwick stop 100 yards away, and some InterCity trains stop at Dunbar station, a mile and a half distant. NO 13 is the lower flat of an early C19 building. Recently renovated, its front door opens, without a step, into a sunny 19ft by 12ft open plan livingroom; with a distant aspect of the John Muir Country Park.
INSIDE you will find a sitting area with fan heater and colour TV, a telephone, dining table, storage heater, and a U-shaped kitchen with fridge, electric hob, microwave, mini-oven/grill, washing machine, and immersion heater with small airing cupboard. A lobby gives access to a shower room and to two small bedrooms. All linen and towels are provided, and there are duvets for the three beds. One part of the old long garden (up 5 steps) is ours, enclosed by a trellis of roses; here you will find a summerhouse.
