We invite you to enjoy the best of the past and the present in this historic and well-established village inn. Whether travelling on business or just taking a leisurely break, you will find all the comforts of modern life housed in 16th century surroundings.
Our guest rooms offer a homely atmosphere within the Inn and this is reflected in the the presentation of your accommodation. All rooms are en-suite and include tea and coffee making facilities, a colour television with Sky, video recorder, telephone, trouser press, and hair dryer. Each room has been furnished individually to complement the historic features. We have for example, in the course of developing the guest rooms rediscovered long-lost features such as original ceiling beams, wall niches, fireplaces with original surrounds - all these have been sympathetically restored to their former splendour.
Lilies Restaurant offers a cosy well-appointed environment to enjoy a superb meal at an affordable price. We aim to use the highest quality fresh produce available to us and all food is cooked and prepared to order.
For those who wish to eat in the more informal atmosphere of the bar, we have an extremely wide range of meals and snacks. A children's menu is also available.
Our conference room provides a refreshingly different venue for your business meeting or seminar and is also a very popular choice for private parties and other social functions. We welcome your equiries - weddings are a speciality.
Nestling on the south eastern edge of the Severn Vale within sight of the estuary, The Old Bowl Inn at Lower Almondsbury is a picturesque white-washed stone built Inn from the 16th century. Its history dates back even further, however, to 1146 when monks building the adjacent church of St Mary the Virgin were housed in 3 cottages which stood there. During subsequent centuries the tunnels between these cottages, the church and priory (now a farmhouse) were created to afford protection against marauding foreign invaders.
The present building was used by James I's sheriffs during the first half of the seventeenth century to try supporters of the Duke of Monmouth, although they are unlikely to be the cause of the Inn's recent inhabitant, the ghost of `The Grey Lady', seen on various occasions since the nineteenth century. The Old Bowl Inn derives its name from its location on the edge of the Severn's estuary surrounding flatland and is within easy reach of a variety of places of interest, from the historic port of Bristol, the Georgian city of Bath, the fascinating Wildfowl Reserve at Slimbridge, to the beautiful Wye Valley, Forest of Dean and Tintern Abbey just over the majestic Severn Bridge into South Wales.
