West Usk Lighthouse was built by the Scottish architect James Walker, and is found at the end of a very long stony track, at the junction of the estuaries of the Rivers Usk and Severn. It was originally on its own island with views far out into the Bristol Channel. Since then the land has been reclaimed and although on one side the loudest sound is of the sea when the tide comes racing in to the foot of the building, on the other only the occasional mooing can be heard.

The Lighthouse is on two floors with a diameter of 50 feet and walls nearly three feet thick. The slate-bedded enterance hall leads to a central spiral stone staircase over the original well, that provided drinking water for the keepers.

The first floor bedrooms are arranged like wedges of camembert around the perimeter, each room having a slightly different outlook over the low lying marshes and rivers. The bedrooms have been pleasantly but simply furnished with pretty fabrics. Steps lead up to the roof and the 15 foot diameter LAMP ROOM where you get the full 360 degree view. The flat roof has seats from which to watch ships go by and the spectacular sunsets - or facing the other way, sunrises.
