Park House is a country house standing in picturesque gardens in the beautiful surroundings of the Sandringham Royal Estate in West Norfolk. It has been specially designed and equipped for people with disabilities and provides a unique opportunity for them and their relatives or companions to enjoy a relaxing break at any time of the year.
The large manor house was built in 1863 and later became the birthplace and childhood home of Diana, Princess of Wales. Presented by The Queen to the Leonard Cheshire Foundation in 1983, it was subsequently modernised and equipped to cater for any physical disability. Between January and March 2000, the hotel is having a complete refurbishment, costing over over 500,000.
The building includes numerous features designed to make each visitor's stay as comfortable as possible. The bedrooms and bathrooms are fitted with specialist equipment, in fact everything has been designed with disability in mind. Lifts and ramps provide easy wheelchair access throughout the house and the needs of deaf and blind people are incorporated. The bedrooms and some of the public rooms are non smoking areas and there is a hairdressing salon on the premises.
Park House accommodates up to 24 guests in 8 single and 8 twin bedded rooms. Several are furnished in classic style, whereas others are of modern design and some have overhead hoists. All single rooms have their own toilet and shower, and the twin rooms have baths fitted with taps needing only finger tip control. Each room has a direct dial telephone, tea and coffee making facilities and colour television, while a bedside console controls lighting and radio and provides communication with the staff. Tendercare beds are available on request and the divans can be fitted with bedraisers. Arjo and Parker baths with a jacuzzi are also available.
An exceptional standard of assistance, provided by qualified staff, is on hand 24 hours a day. Individual needs are attended unobtrusively and prospective guests can choose whether to bring their own carers or ask Park House for assistance when applying for a reservation. However, able bodied guests also have the option of a first floor flat or cheaper bedrooms in the adjacent coachouse.
Park House cuisine has a reputation for freshness, quality and careful attention to individual needs. The dining room, has a superb view across a cricket field to the wooded skyline of Sandringham Park. The lounges are bright and roomy and include a library, talking books and stereo. There is a spacious conservatory and a games room with television, video, snooker, bowls, a piano and facilities for painting and crafts. On most evenings entertainment is provided after dinner. Outdoors there is a patio and raised garden and wheelchair paths through the attractive grounds.
The winter months also feature Special Interest Weeks on craft, health and beauty, painting, gardening and music, in addition to a pre Christmas activity week.
West Norfolk has numerous attractions within easy reach of Park House and guests are assured of every oppotunity to see the local area using our own adapted minibuses. Norfolk's unspoilt countryside, scenic coast, nature reserve and stately homes feature on our regular outings, and the Queen's country residence at Sandringham House is open during the summer. Kings Lynn is popular for shopping trips and the bracing seaside resort of Hunstanton is nearby. The historic cities of Ely, Cambridge and Norwich are easily reached from Sandringham and day trips can be arranged to the Norfolk Broads.
