Our beautiful country house was built in 1899 as the six-bedroomed retreat of a Victorian gentleman. Nestling in almost three acres of natural secluded gardens, it enjoys a truely superb elevated location.

You may enjoy afternoon tea in the Conservatory and see the forever-changing vista of Lake Windermere and the Fells on those days with a nip in the air, relax by a crackling log fire with a well-earned drink.

The lounge is a peaceful refuge from the hustle and bustle of the day, with comfortable chairs, magazines and books. The ideal place to wait for friends or enjoy a quiet read.

Good food is an important part of any holiday. Each evening our chefs will offer a varied dinner of five courses, which are carefully prepared and beautifully presented. We endeavour to use as much local produce as possible - with trout from Ethswaite Water, to venison from the Grizedale Forest.

A good traditional breakfast is an excellent start to the day, with a variety of dishes on offer, or if you prefere, a Continental Breakfast can be served in your room.

The restaurant commands a glorious view of the Lake and hills to the west and this setting adds to the enjoyment of our superb cuisine. Our carefully selected wine list offers an interesting variety of fine wines, a perfect accompaniment to your meal.

We have a wide variety of rooms, all individually and tastefully furnished, some with superb views of Lake Windermere and the fells beyond and for that special occasion, some have the added luxury of a personal jacuzzi and four-poster bed.

Which ever type of room you choose, you will find it comfortably appointed with colour television, a satellite channel, tea/coffee tray, radio, direct-dial telephone and en suite bathroom.

All our leisure facilities are on site at Hillthwaite House and are for the exclusive use of our guests, so why not awaken your appetite by enjoying a dip before breakfast or relax there after a busy day exploring.

The pool is heated to 80F, for maximum enjoyment, whatever the weather. Alongside it you may enjoy the invigoration of our Tylo(R) steam room, with its relaxing eucalyptus essence and high humidity to relax the muscles and stimulate the blood, or you may prefere a session in our traditional sauna.

Our location provides an excellent base for those who enjoy outdoor activities. We will be pleased to arrange rounds of golf, horse riding, guided walks or sailing. In fact we will endeavour to find opportunities for you to pursue your favourite pastime.
