Kinloch is an elegant white stone building situated at the head of Loch Na Dal on the Sleat Peninsula, known as the Garden of Skye. Built originally in 1680 as a farmhouse, Kinloch was developed during the 18th Century as a Shooting Lodge for the Macdonalds of Skye.
Godfrey Macdonald of Macdonald, Lord Macdonald and High Chief of Clan Donald, (the oldest and largest of the Highland clans) with his wife Claire, established Kinloch as a small country hotel in 1973 following the death of his father. Today Kinlock continues to be the home of Lord and Lady Macdonald and their four children, Alexandra, Isabella, Meriel and Hugo. Over the last twenty years considerable changes have been made to the interior of ther Lodge, ensuring that guests enjoy the commanding views either across the Loch to the dramatic mountains of Knoydart on the mainland, or to the west to Skye's famous jagged Cuillin Ridge. The garden slopes down to the sea, whilst to the north the ground rises steeply to 1200 feet.
Kinloch is full of paintings of the Macdonald ancestors, old furniture, family ornaments and photographs - very much a family home with two comfortable drawing rooms, log fires and the most spectacular views. The ten bedrooms with en suite or attendant bathrooms, are all comfortably appointed and individually decorated, and vary in size and this is reflected in the tariff.
The decor throughout, like the bedrooms, is the choice of Lady Macdonald, as is the food, for Claire Macdonald is one of the most renowned cooks and food enthusiasts in Scotland. An award-winning journalist and author of twelve best selling cookboks, Clair has for the last twenty years produced the most delicious food seasonal to Scotland. Everything is homemade and accounts for Kinloch's enviable international reputation over two decades.
A small choice dinner is offered every evening and each dish is prepared with great feeling - from the homemade breakfast scones to the after dinner fudge. Breakfasts are also justly famous.
The house itself is a mile from the main road, at the head of a sea loch amidst an area famous for its flora and fauna. Otters inhabit the sea shore and eagles soar in the mountains behind. Kiloch is unique in every way - from the tranquillity of its surroundings, the clean, pure air through to the delicious peaty water which comes from the spring behind the house.
There are many sporting and other activities to do in the area - * fishing * stalking * rough shooting * wildfowling * climbing * walking * riding and pony trekking * sailing * golf.
In the Spring and early Summer, the wild and formal gardens of Armadale Castle, Dunvegan and the Lochalsh Woodland Garden are splendours to behold. Indeed Inverewe is no distance away.
A number of unique Highland events occur throughout the year, including the Highland Games in Portree and the competitions for the silver Chanter at Dunvegan and the Donald Macdonald Quaich at Armadale, to which only a small number of outstanding pipers are invited.
