Caldew View offers comfortable accommodation, and has a warm friendly atmosphere and excellent food and service. It is situated in a quiet riverside location along the Cumbria Way, Caldew Riverside Trail and 'Mill Trail'. Hadrians Wall is within 2 miles.
Choose your breakfast from the extensive selection offered daily, with evening meals available on request. During the summer months home made ice cream from a traditional recipe will be introduced. Welcome tray, tea and coffee making facilities and television in bedrooms.
Only three minutes walk from the city centre, rail and bus stations and attractions including the nearby swimming and health centre. Only two miles to junction 42 on the M6.
The many walkers along the Cumbria Way and Hadrians Wall now have the opportunity to stay right at the end of the trail, close to the city and only a few minutes walk from the main railway station. The cycle trail is well used and it may be possible to hire cycles at very reasonable daily rate.
In the past, the River Caldew provided textile mills with both power and abundant water. Today, it is stocked regularly with salmon, trout and other fresh water fish, and is one of only two rivers with a tagging system to monitor amounts of returning fish. The Caldew is the journeys end for hundreds of returning salmon after their daunting swim across the Atlantic Ocean from Greenland.
Just a few minutes walk from the house, along the pleasant riverside trail, is the weir and the fish ladder where, particularly between October and January, salmon leaping up here is a spectacular sight. As this is a council owned river, fishing is very inexpensive here as opposed to the main river, the Eden. Licenses are between 2 - 5 UK pounds, and can be purchased at the local post office. Ducks, heron, kingfisher and other birds are regular visitors to this stretch of river.
The historic City of Carlisle, the Northern Lakes, Southern Scotland and the Galloway coastline are all just a short drive away. Keswick, Kendal - with the now renowned 'K Shoe Village', and Penrith with its massive Saturday market are all well worth a visit.
Carlisle is just eight miles from Gretna Green and the famed wedding rooms etc. shops and attractions open every day. Gretna itself has a very popular little Sunday market throughout the year. Along the Galloway coast some of the scenery, beaches and views of the Solway Estuary are quite remarkable.
We look forward to welcoming you and to help you plan your stay we have lots of local information and brochures available, highlighting the walks, attractions and beauty spots of the area.
