Gina, who went to art school only as a mature student and now works as an illustrator, has her paintings and drawings all over the house, and one wall of the entrance hall is covered with her mural of local scenery, with Saddleback in the background. All the rooms are of the scale one would expect in a Georgian house, and they are decorated to advantage in plain colours. In the sitting room, settees face each other across an oriental rug in front of an open fireplace with glazed bookcases on each side. Up the staircase - lined with more of Gina's striking paintings - the bedrooms have plain coloured walls, carved pine bedsteads, some antique furniture and William Morris fabrics. There are three bedrooms, which includes a family suite with a bunk room and bathroom. There is also an additional bedroom in a converted barn (usually for self-catering), which has a wood stove as well as its own bathroom. Rooms have tea and coffee making facilities, television and views of either the large garden or countryside. Some people like to sleep in a comfortable gypsy caravan in the grounds (the Farncombes used to have several of these, which they used for conducted treks into the Lake District). Guests have free membership of a local country club, with swimming pool, tennis courts etc. No evening meal is served because the village inn serves excellent food, though a light supper can often be produced. Like breakfast, this may be served in the conservatory at the back of the house, under a grapevine which may be as old as the house. Beyond the lawn is a nature reserve and pond where badgers ans unusual birds may be seen. On the horizon are the peaks of the Lake District - Saddleback (Blencathra) and Skiddaw. The village takes its name from one of William the Conqueror's barons. His seat, in the next village, is not open to the public, but you can peer into the private dungeon he maintained. A few miles away, Hutton-in-the-Forest, often open during the summer, is a Jacobean mansion with fine gardens and woods. Ulleswater is close, but this peaceful and little known area has great attractions of its own. Recommended in "Staying Off The Beaton Track in England & Wales 1996" Regret no smoking.
